Today, Aly & AJ were answering questions of fans on Reddit. We got the list of all the questions sorted by categories (from Aly & AJ Discord Community). If we missed something, let us know. Anyway, enjoy it and find out something new.

JOAN OF ARC ON THE DANCE FLOOR

Q: Joan of Arc is great because it’s another example of how well you guys can put out a stellar video with the small team that you have. Do either of you come up with the music video ideas on your own or is it a joint effort?

A: Aly had a big hand in Joan concept. AoP we wanted to shoot in Berlin. We are small team but getting better all the time at independent releases. Small but mighty and growing!

Q: How long did it take to shoot the Joan of Arc on the Dance Floor video? I love it, and I thought it was super creative for something done during quarantine.

A: We shot the whole thing in seven hours in Aly’s living room. About 11am-6pm. And thank you!

Q: Your take on The Passion of Joan of Arc really brings things into a modern day light. It is incredible to think about how so many women today are a Joan of Arc for us. What does your new song Joan of Arc on the Dance Floor mean to you personally?

A: The film feels shockingly relevant. Still councils who work to silence women to keep their power. Song represents modern women who are misunderstand or wrongly accused but refuse to be gaslit

Q: What inspired you to use Joan’s passion for a song? Have you always been a fan of hers or did you rediscover her story more recently?

A: Rediscovered her story more recently. A lot of our interest in her came from watching The Passion of Joan of Arc which we modeled the music video after. One of unreleased songs from the Hollywood Recs era was about Magellan so maybe we have a thing for historical figures

Q: How did you discover “The Passion of Joan of Arc,” and what about the film inspired you to create the single?

A: My husband and Falconetti!

2020 ALBUM

Q: Will any of the previous singles be on the album? absolutely love your new music can’t believe you’re still producing A+ music years later

A: Neither of past two singles are on the full length record

Q: What’s your favorite song you’ve ever written and why?

A: Some of these new songs. We are super proud of them

Q: Are there any interesting co-writes on the album aside from Olen?

A: Olen co write is bomb and going on the record

Q: In a recent interview, AJ said the sound of the album would be of a new sound, less of what you’re doing now and lean more towards what we hear in your live shows. Is there a song in your catalog thus far that this new sound will be more reminiscent of? (Or a specific live rendition you can compare it, too?) Can’t wait. 🙂

A: Our goal was to make a record that feels timeless and will hold up decades from now. And felt true to us. And we are soooooo excited about it. Recording with live musicians in a studio and doing vocals to tape on some of it

Q: Joan of Arc and Attack of Panic are both absolute bangers with distinct sounds, is the album going to lean more into those flashy synth disco vibes or will there be more darker moments like AoP?

A: Not really either. Pop sensibilities always come through in our process but sound is going to be different

Q: Hi both! Since the album is written, does that mean you have a title for it in mind? (Or will it be self-titled?)

A: Do have a title in mind but things always change

Q: Is there any confirmation when you guys can go back into the studio to record the new tunes for the album?

A: We were in the studio yesterday with only one other person. This did hugely change our plans for how and where we were going to record. Like everyone working right now it’s about finding new solutions. But we will find a way

Q: Have you considered writing or directing something? Would love to see a mini movie/visual album for your next record!

A: Definitely going to make a documentary about the process of making the record. No current scripts coming from us. Aly wants to write stand up someday

MODERN ALY & AJ MUSIC

Q: Was there anything in particular that inspired the creative direction of the Take Me music video? It’s so beautiful and fun to watch. (also when my girlfriend and I had started dating this song had just come out and I’d listen to it all day thinking about her <3) A: I started dating my current bf when single came out. Flirted on set of the shoot. Idea came from Aly's warped mind (play on words Take Me)

Q: What inspired your genre change to synth/80s ish driven music? Were you always into this style?

A: All 80s direction started before Ten Years when we were writing with Mike Einziger of Incubus and listening to a lot of Duran Duran and Depeche Mode

Q: Thoughts on releasing a Good Love/With You 45 record?

A: We are looking at ways to release those songs on vinyl. We have a huge response to vinyl which is so affirming

Q: Will you direct any more of your future music videos?

A: Aly is like Barbara Loden, one time directing

CLASSIC ALY & AJ MUSIC

Q: How do you feel about Into the Rush turning 15 this year? We’d love to hear a Slow Down type of song on the new record if that’s near what new sound will be.

A: Really proud of that record. Makes us feel old as hell. No songs reminiscent of Slow Down but willing to play live down the road

Q: What were some of your favorite memories from creating Into the Rush?

A: Billing expensive sushi to Hollywood Records and realizing that’s only billed back to us later.

Q: could we possibly get insomniatic and into the rush on vinyl?

Q: What are the odds of y’all recording an explicit version of potential break up song? :eyes:

A: YES

A: Yes, love throwback merch

ACTING

Q: AJ, I’m so sorry to hear that Schooled was cancelled. I loved that show so much. Any chance you might still make appearances as Lainey on The Goldbergs?

Q: What was your favorite movie to star in and why was it Cow Belles?

A: Cow Belles, of course.

Q: AJ! your voice over work with Steven Universe and notably Catra from She-Ra and the Princesses of Power is so fucking good. both shows have incredible VO casts. what was it like lending your voice to two of the most iconic queer animated shows, and can we expect to hear your voice elsewhere anytime soon? 😊

A: Let’s do an AMA with my agent and we can all find out! First thank you so much. So lucky to work on these two shows. So so lucky. Response has been incredible. Hope I can record more animated roles that are as impactful as these have been. Women like Rebecca Sugar and Noelle Stevenson who have created such diverse characters deserve all the praise

Q: Did you have a hand in picking out the soundtrack for your movie Weepah Way For Now? The songs in the film are such a perfect fit for the mood of the movie and the relationship between the sisters.

A: Yeah collectively but clearing songs for small films is really difficult and it’s not always possible to use your first choices so we were very fortunate those bands for the most part let us use their work

Q: Aly, would you ever consider doing voice acting like AJ has done with Catra? And would either of you ever consider voicing video game characters?

A: I’m auditioning! No interest so far!

A: AJ: Easy A

Q: What kind of trouble did you get into with fellow Disney kids back in the day?

A: Didn’t get in much trouble but saw a lot. We were on the sidelines of Disney after dark

Q: Thank you for the meet and greet yesterday! I ended our chat yesterday thanking you two for being such allies to the LGBTQ+ community and what they meant to me as a lesbian. I wanted to let you know that I grew in a Christian home and your music was some of the few secular artists I could listen to. Growing up and seeing you two come to your own views and values from your Christian childhood has helped me as I have done the same. My family outside a few members are not supportive of me, including my parents. It has not been easy as I only came out two years ago, but I am happy and living my true honest life. Having people in the spotlight like you two be outspoken allies is so important so thank you!

A: Thank you for this message. The core of Christianity is to love others as you are loved by God. We all grow and evolve and there should be acceptance and patience for other’s growth, especially from Christians. Your life is beautiful, your honesty is beautiful. Always will be.

Q: Best/worst thing about being on Disney Channel?

A: Best: Still in people’s childhood memories
Worst: Still in every headline about us

A: Kurt Vile, Ray LaMontagne, Patrick Watson, Joe Carter (blues), My Morning Jacket, Dylan. Listen to our playlists on Spotify!

Thanks for all of your art. You’re the coolest.

A: You’re the coolest. Definitely changed over the years. Early ones Beach Boys, The Police. Now, My Morning Jacket, The Cardigans, War on Drugs

Q: Was it difficult to transition out of the Disney umbrella or did you always feel ownership over your own brand, even as teenagers? Did either of you feel hesitant on returning to music because of it?

A: Hesitation, very much so. Out of fear. Knew it was the right thing to do. Always felt ownership of our writing

Q: AJ, you posted a few weeks back about you and Josh doing duets on your insta page , is this true or was it just a cute caption on your photo.

A: At the time cute caption. But may actually do it. He wants it to not be shared but of course I will anyway
